German As A Foreign Language
Our German as a Foreign Language program integrates native German speakers and learners in a supportive environment focused on building reading, writing, listening, and speaking proficiency. Students collaborate across language backgrounds as they gain communicative competence and deepen their understanding of German culture. The program aims to equip students with advanced German skills for integration into the local community, success in German higher education, and career opportunities in Germany and beyond. Dynamic language instruction fosters intellectual curiosity, cross-cultural appreciation, and internationally-minded graduates.
Assessment
Student language skills are assessed in multiple ways throughout the program. Initial placement tests like the Steps test for secondary students and individual interviews help determine the appropriate starting level and trajectory for each learner.
Ongoing performance reviews monitor development through regular exams and grades in the core German classes. Subject teachers also continuously evaluate proficiency as students work with academic content.
External language certificates like Fit in Deutsch (A1-A2 levels) and German for Young People (B1 level) provide benchmarking and validation of progress through recognized qualifications.
Curriculum
The curriculum comprises both intensive German language instruction and immersion across academic subjects:
Small group DaF lessons at the secondary level allow targeted practice to build reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. By addressing individual needs, these lessons complement the core German classes with reinforcement and extension.
An immersion approach in subjects like math, science, history, and literature accelerates the acquisition of academic German. Teachers strategically introduce new vocabulary and make content comprehensible through differentiated instructional techniques.
Enrichment activities further motivate usage and proficiency. German reading/writing contests in grades 5-6 and youth presentations and debates in grades 7-10 provide fun opportunities to use German creatively and build confidence.
