We are very excited to welcome you to our wonderful school community here in Ethiopia’s capital city. Our school provides quality education to students from preschool through high school.
We have a diverse student body comprised of embassy families, expatriates, and local Ethiopian families. Our dedicated teachers, staff, parents and students work together to create a supportive learning environment.

Settling In ...
Visa
Business and tourist visas must be obtained prior to arrival. Apply for tourist visas electronically through the Ethiopian embassy in your home country. Business visas require application in person at the embassy. Make sure to bring passport photos for identification cards and driving licenses.

Housing
Due to increasing development, affordable houses near the school are becoming more scarce. Apartment living may become more common than houses. Work with a local real estate broker to view options. Another option is taking over a home from departing staff. Be prepared to pay 6-12 months rent upfront, as this is typical.
Shipping
Import duties make new electronics very expensive, so bring essentials like laptops, cell phones, and tablets with you. Also recommended to ship yourself: kitchen appliances, gardening tools, toys, musical instruments, formalwear, rainboots, everyday shoes and clothing. Shipments take 6-8 weeks to arrive by sea freight.
Money
Many international banks offer free foreign withdrawals using credit cards. ATMs dispense local currency (Birr). Have some USD and Euros on hand for travel. Exchange extra back upon departure.
Insurance
Secure international health insurance with medical evacuation coverage prior to arrival. This is essential.
Utilities
Voltage is 220V, 50Hz. Bring surge protectors for electronics. Gas stoves need adapters and hoses. Water supply can be intermittent.
Daily Life
Food
Local markets and grocers provide basics like produce, bread and dairy. International markets offer imported foods and specialty items. Be aware of allergies or dietary restrictions.
Culture
Ethiopian culture is rich and vibrant. Attend concerts, events, markets to embrace the local lifestyle. Amharic skills also help daily life.
Transportation
An off-road or SUV is recommended for rugged roads. Theft of tires/mirrors is common - always park in busy areas and lock doors. Get high-altitude tires.
Weekends/Holidays
Many head to Lake Langano for watersports, camping, hiking. Pack supplies as amenities are basic. Other great destinations across varying climates.
Safety
Petty crime and scams do occur. Be alert in public, avoid going off with strangers, and keep valuables hidden. Most residents feel relatively safe.
Language
Find a tutor for Amharic lessons. Even basic phrases go a long way in daily interactions.
Staff
Many head to Lake Langano for watersports, camping, hiking. Pack supplies as amenities are basic. Other great destinations across varying climates.
Health
Care
Hospitals can lack specialized care and equipment. International insurance with evacuation is strongly advised.
Food Safety
Avoid raw foods. Only drink bottled/boiled water. Check ice cubes.
Hydration
Drink at least 2 liters purified or bottled water daily. High altitude intensifies dehydration.
Vaccines
Consult your doctor for recommended immunizations and anti-malaria.
Pets
Import regulations frequently change. Consult with a local veterinarian early to arrange all documents, flights, and logistics.
